Christ and Culture: The Call to be Salt and Light in a Decaying and Darkening World

Alasdair MacIntyre, in his book, After Virtue, argues that Western culture is in a situation very similar to the cultural moment when the Roman Empire fell. Rather than being governed by reason, faith, or some combination of the two, our culture is governed by emotivism. Emotivism is the concept that moral choices are simply expressions of choosing what “feels right,” not because there is an objective right and wrong. Because of this, our culture is unraveling.

In a culture like ours, where realities as simple and obvious as identifying a person’s gender with their biological sex is rejected and seen as hateful, not just by the periphery of society, but the major institutions, it is difficult to avoid agreeing with MacIntyre’s point. If our culture can’t agree on the fact that boys should compete against boys, and girls should compete against girls, that only women can have babies, and that people and businesses should be able to make decisions and policies accordingly, how can we improve many of the much more complex areas of our culture? It’s a dark time.

That’s why I believe it’s important for all Christians to think more thoroughly and carefully about what it means to be a Christian in this culture. In the midst of the cultural chaos, Jesus provides a pathway forward. He’s brought the church through more difficult times, enabling them to be both faithful and fruitful. I believe he is doing the same today. But it won’t be easy. To help, I think Christians need to return to Matthew’s Gospel and reorient their lives accordingly.

Matthew’s Gospel as a Playbook for Cultural Engagement

When Jesus stood on the side of that Galilean hill delivering what we now call, the Sermon on the Mount, the people of God were not in a position of cultural power. They weren’t in a position of strength economically, politically, or any other meaningful cultural measure. They didn’t hold positions in the elite institutions of the times, as James Davidson Hunter and others have argued are important for cultural change. They weren’t winning the battle of ideas culturally, as Francis Shaeffer and so many others have tried to help so many world changers do. In fact, the first followers of Jesus were unmistakably vulnerable politically, economically, medically, professionally, and relationally as they carried out their lives under the harsh rule of Rome.

And yet, it was to those powerless people, that Jesus set out a vision, one that focused on creating a people that are salt and light in a decaying and darkening world, that has undeniably changed the world. In order to be salt and light, his followers had to be prayerful (Matt 6:9-13), principled (Matt 5-7), and practical (Matt 8-9). They were to be prayerful because prayer, more than anything else, shows whether we really believe that we need God’s help to advance God’s mission in our day-to-day lives They were to be principled because just as creation unraveled with the rejection of God’s powerful word (Gen 3:1-6), it will be restored by God’s powerful word. And, finally, Jesus’ followers are to be practical, they are to make a difference practically in the lives of those around them, because Jesus loves to use “good works” like feeding the hungry, caring for the poor, and more, to adorn the gospel and all its world changing realities (Titus 2:10). Christians don’t need cultural power to bring about cultural change because Christians follow a king whose kingdom, and all its power, is not of this world—that created this world (Jn 18:37).

But it’s important, as we seek to follow Jesus’ plan for being salt and light in a decaying and darkening world, being a prayerful, principled, and practical, that we don’t miss out on the rest of Jesus’ plan revealed in Matthew’s gospel. In a culture marked by “expressive individualism,” it’s easy to skip the following parts of Matthew’s gospel, which show that Jesus is advancing his mission through a people, a church, that he is building (Matt 16:18). Why is this so important to see? Because Jesus’ mission advances most impactfully when his followers commit to one another to carry out his mission in local churches. These local churches aren’t supposed to be just another group of people who share the same preferences. They are a people who share the same faith in the crucified and risen Lord. They believe that Jesus’ body and blood, and his indwelling Holy Spirit, is enough to change their relationship with God and others.

Matthew’s Gospel doesn’t end numerically better than it starts. When Jesus meets his disciples on a hill in Galilee there are less present than when he delivered his Sermon on the Mount. But a decline in numbers doesn’t always mean a decline in influence. The major difference, obviously, was that Jesus was now the crucified and risen Savior—one whose hands were marked by eternally healed scars. His promised presence provides the key to advancing his disciple-making, and, consequently, world changing, purposes (Matt 28:18-20).

Matthew’s Gospel, which some scholars argue is the most read book in all of the Bible, provides a playbook for cultural change—one that doesn’t depend on cultural credibility, but the power and presence of the risen Lord.

Following the Mission of Christ throughout the History of the Church

A surface level reading of the book of Acts and the rest of the New Testament reveals unmistakably, that the followers of Jesus were prayerful, principled, and practical, as they sought to be salt and light in a decaying and darkening world. Local churches were started and the results were stunning. No one, no matter how well positioned culturally, in those cultures had the intellectual and spiritual resources to get people, as divided as they were culturally, to love and serve one another sacrificially like brothers and sisters, to do unmistakable good to all types of people. Little by little, life by life, the gospel began to change the world. The light was pushing back the darkness.

Christians enjoyed with gratitude all of the good things in their lives and culture given by God (Jms 1:17). Because the Fall hasn’t erased all of the goodness of God’s creation, there is much to be enjoyed. They also rejected many of the ideas and lifestyle choices that were evidence of the Fall and the ongoing powerful presence of sin in our broken world. And, finally, they sought to enhance or improve their lives, the lives around them, and beyond, fighting to bring all things in submission to the Lordship of Christ (Eph. 6:10-20).

This same trajectory was followed beyond biblical times through every phase of church history, starting with the Patristic period (30-590), then the early Medieval period (590-1054), the late Medieval period (1054-1517), the Reformation (1517-1689), and the Modern Period (1689-Present).

During the first part of the Patristic period, Christians combatted heresies, launched what would eventually become hospitals, cared for forsaken children, and more. During this period, Augustine, wrote the City of God, where he provided a devastating critique of pagan culture and one of the greatest writings in the history of the church.

During the early Medieval period, as Christians lived in a world where Rome had been conquered by the barbicans, they faced new cultural challenges with the beginning of Islam in 622, the rise of the Holy Roman Empire, and countless other challenges. Benedict’s “strategic withdrawal” from much of the surrounding culture, provided resources that Christians greatly needed in the centuries to come, as Rod Dreher has helpfully observed in The Benedict Option.

Christians launched educational institutions that have continued until today during the late Medieval period. The most prominent example, of course, is Oxford, which was started in 1096. Christians also dealt with major abuses in the church, advanced Bible translations at the cost of their lives, and the Crusades.

Christians entered the 1500’s as a major cultural force, for good and for ill. They had come a long way from that small hill in Galilee. Much good and much harm had been done in Jesus’ name. There was a need for major change. Starting with Martin Luther, the Reformation, created all kinds of amazing glimpses of “light in the darkness.” The five solas revolutionized how Christians approached being “salt and light” in a decaying and darkening world. The importance of “vocation” was elevated for all Christians. Abraham Kuyper helped followers in all seven spheres of culture see how to bring them under the Lordship of Jesus.

Finally, in the Modern period, with the rise of the Enlightenment challenge, Christians experienced religious toleration, advanced world missions, started major educational institutions (like Harvard was in the 1600’s to train ministers), and more. The first and second Great Awakening took place. George Mueller revolutionized orphan care in England. William Wilberforce fought the slave trade. Book publishers were started. Jesus advanced his cause through his church. Of course, Christians continued to make major, sinful errors. The role of many Christians in the slave trade remains, most likely, the greatest hypocritical sin of this period.

While this embarrassingly succinct overview of church history is admittedly simplistic, I include it to help provide historical perspective that shows every Christian at every time, has had challenges and opportunities to be salt and light—to be prayerful, principled, and practical. The Spirit of Christ has powerfully advanced the Father’s purposes through Christ’s blood-bought, imperfect church.  

The Church as Salt and Light in a Decaying and Darkening World

Over the last 75 years or so, as Christian thinkers have tried to help Christians understand how best to be salt and light in a decaying and darkening world, the most substantial efforts have started by wrestling with how best to define “culture.” H. Richard Niebuhr’s, Christ and Culture, arguably the most influential work on its subject since it was written, does. Francis Schaeffer, Charles Colson, Nancy Pearcy, Andy Crouch, James Davidson Hunter, just to name a few thinkers, all spend time reflecting on the best way to define “culture.”

Hunter, in To Change the World, argues that most definitions can be categorized either as idealists or materialists. Idealists define culture primarily in intellection, worldview terms. These thinkers do a fantastic job showing what Richard Weaver voiced, in 1948, “ideas have consequences.” We change culture, in this view, primarily, when we change how people think about the world.

Materialists, like Andy Crouch, aren’t materialists in the sense that they don’t believe in God and the supernatural. Rather, they identify culture primarily with what is made of the creation. Hence, the title of Crouch’s book is Culture Making. We change culture, according to this approach, when we create new cultural goods, whether that is a sweater, a song, or whatever.

Hunter highlights what he believes are strengths and weaknesses that are found in each approach. As expected, Hunter provides what he believes is a better way, one that focuses more on the importance of institutions and networks. Perhaps he could best be described as an institutionalist. How do we change the world? By being faithfully present in the institutions and networks around us.

For our purposes, following Abraham Kuyper’s lead, I think it’s most helpful to think about culture as what’s found in the seven spheres of culture: religion, family, education, government, media, arts and entertainment, business, and online. In all of these spheres, I think it’s helpful, although somewhat arbitrary, to recognize that there are different levels of participation in each sphere: thinkers, doers, and consumers.

With this idea of culture, the question, then, becomes, how do we relate to what exists in these various spheres, with these various levels? While Niebuhr’s 5-fold typology is incredibly influential, I think that T.M. Moore, in his Culture Matters, provides a helpful way to think about how Christians engage with their culture: cultural indifference, cultural aversion, cultural trivialization, cultural accommodation, cultural separation, culture triumphalism. As each category is thought about, he notes, “No one adheres to any of these six models as the exclusive or even self-conscious approach to culture matters.” In short, culture is so complex, that there are times when we need to employ each of these approaches as we try to be salt and light in a decaying and darkening world.

I think that the task before us is the same as the task before those first followers listening to the crucified and risen Lord Jesus deliver his Great Commission. We should be prayerful, principled, and practical as we seek to advance the cause of Christ in partnership with other believers in local churches.

As Christians think about the messages, institutions, people, and all the rest, around us in all seven spheres, at every level in those spheres of culture, we should enjoy the good gifts of God in our culture with gratitude, resist the evidences of the Fall in our culture around us and inside of us, and improve every aspect of the culture for the glory of Christ. Let’s not run from the battle, let’s engage with it. But let’s fight, not as the world fights, but as our Lord fights, with truth and grace—prayerful, principled, and practically.

Some of the issues before us are obvious and some are not. That’s why it’s important to remember, as the New Testament church had to be reminded of, that we see through a glass dimly (1 Cor 13:12; Rom 14). Let’s remember that it’s not just important that we are right, we must be loving (1 Cor 13:1-7). If the Apostle Paul and Barnabas didn’t agree on the best way to move the cause of Christ forward, we’ll have our struggles to get along too.

Christians are a part of their culture, even as they are called to represent Christ in their culture, enjoying the good, rejecting the bad, and bringing all things in alignment with Christ (Eph 1:10). When we do this prayerfully, principled, and practical, we can be salt and light in a decaying and darkening world.

Specific Answers to Prayer: A 3rd Grader Prays His Bully Problems and Pancake Dreams

Nobody likes hearing stories of kids getting bullied, much less a 3rd grader whose dad is out of the country for work. But that’s what was happening. Life can be tough in 3rd grade.

The boys mom saw someone share online that they were enjoying my book, 21 Days to Childlike Prayer. So she decided to get her and her 3rd grader a copy.

After the first week of readings, the 3rd grader got a specific answer to prayer that thrilled him.

The boy came home from school happier than usual. His mom wondered what was going on. It turns out that he prayed that day that he wouldn’t be bullied at school in a way that he was expecting to be. And God answered his specific prayer with a “yes”! he was so happy.

Hilariously, he also prayed that God would provide pancakes at lunch that day. As he told his mom the story of the day, he told her that the pancakes, unfortunately, weren’t served. But the boy said, “I guess it wasn’t what was best for me.” If you’ve read week 1, you know that he is communicating the heart of childlike trust.

When I heard this story, I was so moved. I hated that this boy is getting bullied, that he is facing it without his earthly Father. But I loved how his mom was leading him spiritually. I was thrilled that as a 3rd grader, he was already praying his problems, praying with specificity, and praying with childlike trust (specific “no’s” require childlike trust).  

The 3rd grader believes his heavenly Father loves him enough and is powerful enough to help him with his bully problem and his pancake dreams. God is glorified by that. What does your prayer life say about your belief in God’s love and power?  

4 Reasons Why I Wrote “21 Days to Childlike Prayer: Changing Your World One Specific Prayer at a Time”

Charles Spurgeon was one of the greatest preachers in the history of Christianity. He was known as the “Prince of Preachers.” If you’ve ever read one of his many available sermons from the 1800s, then you can understand why so many are still impressed with his preaching ministry.

But it was prayer that Spurgeon believed gave his gospel-centered ministry such power. That’s why he said, “I would rather teach one man to pray than ten men to preach.” Spurgeon knew how God loved to work through prayer to show his power and presence. Spurgeon also knew of the tendencies of Christians, even pastors and leaders, to overlook it. Christians prize eloquence, insight, and activity.

It took many years and challenging seasons for me to finally share Spurgeon’s love for prayer. Since that difficult time, few things have brought me greater joy than praying and helping others learn to pray. These joys led, eventually, to the writing of 21 Days to Childlike Prayer. While I love and am thankful for other great books on prayer, I wrote my book for the following four reasons.

To provide a book on prayer that’s accessible even for new Christians – One of my favorite parts of being a pastor is helping people who have never prayed, learn to pray. Accessibility marked Jesus’ ministry, the Apostles’, Spurgeon’s, and, hopefully, this book. When Jesus taught his disciples about prayer, he pointed them to the relationship between a Father and a child. He didn’t say that they needed to become more spiritually sophisticated to have the prayer life he wanted them to have. They just needed to become more childlike. That’s what this book is all about. And that’s why the chapters are short and written in an accessible manner. I am passionate about helping as many people as possible learn how prayer helps them experience the power and presence of God in their problems and plans.

To provide a book on prayer that challenges seasoned pastors and ministry leaders – As a ministry leader and pastor, I didn’t have much of a prayer life. Many pastors and leaders I’ve known have struggled in similar ways. It’s easy to move through years of ministry without prioritizing prayer. Through a difficult season, I found the prayer life I’d looked for my whole life. I want to help leaders learn the things I learned without going through what I went through. Jesus doesn’t want his church being led by prayerless men and women. While I wrote the book in an accessible way, I believe it is substantive enough to challenge any pastor and ministry leader. Planting Roots Vision Video

What is the Planting Roots Initiative? 

Planting Roots is an initiative to raise money, above and beyond normal giving, to build a church building at our 4095 Clovercroft Rd. property–helping us make disciples, train leaders, and feed the hungry more effectively.  

Our goal is to build an 11,800 sq ft facility that will expand our ability to make disciples, train leaders, and feed the hungry. It will include a larger worship space, lobby, kid space, and bathrooms. It will have a few offices, a kitchenette, an equipping room, and, as is the current practice, it will be able to be used for student ministry on Wednesday nights. Also, the building will include the necessary infrastructure (parking, sewer, landscaping, etc.). The building will be built as Phase 1 of a multi-phase building plan, that will allow the church to be positioned to build efficiently in the future, as the Lord continues to grow Redemption City Church. 

Why are we doing it? 

Redemption City Church exists to be a present preview of and pathway to the future Redemption City (Rev. 21-22)–a city where all of life is centered around the Redeemer. That’s why we are on a mission to make disciples, train leaders, and feed the hungry. Planting Roots is an initiative to help Redemption City Church, who has rented facilities over the past 8 years, build a building that will enable us to be a preview of Redemption City in the decades to come on property we own.

The Vague Prayer Syndrome: What It Is and What To Do About It

The older I get, the harder it is for me to come up with a Christmas list, birthday list, and a Father’s Day list. I’m not sure why it’s so hard. Maybe it’s because I buy what I want? Could be that I know that it hurts the budget? Maybe it’s because I don’t want to make sure I ask for the best possible thing and I don’t feel like I have time to really think it through? I’m not sure. But it’s a challenge for me. And from talking with others, it’s a challenge for them.

You know who this isn’t a challenge for? Kids. When it is time for them to come up with a “gift list,” they have no problem at all. They know exactly what they want. They have no regard for the budget. None! They don’t think about whether or not it is “wise” for them to use their limited number of “presents” on that circled option in the magazine they keep showing you. Children know how to ask for stuff and they know how to ask with specificity.

Part of embracing a childlike identity involves embracing specificity. It means that we learn to get specific with prayer requests. And as easy as that sounds, I’ve found in my life and the lives of those I’ve helped learn to pray, that it is difficult. It takes a good deal of work to help people pray with specificity.

Why? Because most people suffer from what I call, the “Vague Prayer Syndrome.” The “Vague Prayer Syndrome” is where you only pray vague prayers. Those vague prayers are so vague that you would never really know if they were answered by God in any meaningful way. These prayers are general prayers that don’t create any expectancy for an answer or any excitement when they are answered.

As someone who still battles the “Vague Prayer Syndrome,” I know what it sounds like—“God be with us today…” Or, “Bless this food…” The great news is that God answered those requests with a “yes!” How do I know? Because he promised us in Scripture that he would “be with us” and “bless us.”

Do you ever pray prayers like this? Do you only pray like this?

It’s perfectly fine, of course, to pray these prayers. But when you learn to get specific with your prayer requests, God becomes real in your heart and life in a way that he never would without that specificity. And when he becomes real in your life, when you get a glimpse of him working specifically in your life, it changes you. Fearful people experience peace. Bored people find purpose. Frustrated people find patience. Empty people get filled. People reach goals that are beyond their abilities to bring about.

I’ve seen it over and over in my life and in the lives of the people around me. That’s why we say, “Specificity leads to visibility.” When we get specific, the invisible God becomes visible in our lives in a way that he wouldn’t without that specific request. How do you see the invisible God? Get specific with your requests.

Instead of just saying, “Make today go great,” say, “Cause someone to encourage me by the end of the day.” Or, in regards to that staffing effort at work, say, “provide a new employee this week that we know is the one.” Here are some other examples:

God, will you send someone to encourage me today?

God, will you make my encounter with ___________ encouraging tonight?

God, will you cause my parents speak to me more kindly in the mornings this week?

God, will you make my boss affirm my work on this project this week?

God, will you make this physical ailment go away by Thursday?

When God answers those requests, you see God working in your life in ways that lift your heart out of the mess of the world. You start to really believe you have a Father in heaven that cares about you and your problems and plans. You start to awaken the childlike faith your heart was made for.

This is exactly what you see throughout the Bible. When you read the Psalms, you see them specifically praying that God would deliver them from specific fears, help them overcome a specific enemy, revive their soul, and more. The Israelites prayed for a specific deliverance from Egyptian oppression when they were slaves in Egypt. They prayed specifically for God to save them when they had their backs up against the Red Sea and an Egyptian military coming after them. Daniel specifically asked for deliverance from the Lion’s Den. Jonah prayed specifically for God to get him out of that fish’s stomach. Nehemiah prayed that God would help him build a specific wall. And the list could certainly go on. In all of these situations, they knew if God answered those prayers. And because they were specific with their prayers, when the invisible God answered their prayers, they “saw” him in a way that they wouldn’t have without that specificity. Their specificity led to visibility.

The same is true for us. When you are bold enough to pray specific prayers, you give God an opportunity to become visible—real—in your life, in a way he wouldn’t without that specificity.

Ask God to work in specific ways, by specific times, and watch him work. Will he always give you a yes? Of course, not. But many times he will. And when he does, you’ll find that your sense of his presence in your life is greater than any prayer request he grants.

Shane Pruitt’s “4 Generation Fade” Away From God

Evangelist, Shane Pruitt, has worked with young people and their families for years. From his experience and research, he came up with what he calls a “4 Generation Fade” that every family should be aware of as they set the priorities for their families. It goes like this.

Generation 1: Parents don’t make church a high priority for their kids.

Generation 2: Those kids grow up and make church less of a priority for their kids.

Generation 3: Those kids grow up and make church no priority for their kids.

Generation 4: Those kids grow up without a biblical knowledge of God.

If generation 1 knew what kind of potential trajectory they were setting the following generations up for, they would have changed their priorities.

While we all know that there are exceptions to the rule, Pruitt’s “4 Generation Fade” is an important paradigm for families to think through as they set their families’ priorities.

How Do Christians Come Up With Extra Money For Fundraising Efforts Like The “Planting Roots Initiative”?

At Redemption City Church, the church I pastor, we just launched the “Planting Roots Initiative,” which is an initiative to increase people’s love for Jesus as we build infrastructure and a building on our church property that will help us make disciples, train leaders, and feed the hungry. We’re so excited about what we believe God will do during and through this initiative.

But it’s the first time many of our people have gone through something like this, including me! One of the questions I’ve heard from many “first timers” is how do Christians come up with the extra money for something like this? It’s a great question. That’s why I thought I’d offer the following ideas to help people discover the way God is leading them to participate in it.

Ask God to show you what he’d like you to give – God is the giver of all good things, including our money and possessions. In His providence, he thought it was best to place you in the situation that you are in right now, the one that needs extra finances to advance his kingdom purposes. Starting asking him daily what he wants you (or your family) to give to this strategic kingdom cause. We pray because we know that we need his help and that he is willing and able to help. He can make more money appear out of nowhere, new opportunities, and the like. However you financially participate in the initiative, it’s important that your prayer life grows through it.

Think about what you could give from what you have and what you could get – When you talk to people who have been through capital initiatives for the cause of Christ like this one, you hear a lot of different stories, but all of those stories end up in one of two categories. Either people gave from what they already had in savings, securities, etc., or they gave after getting extra money from selling things, stopping certain kinds of spending (eating out less, etc.), or working harder to make more money that could be used for this specific cause.

Create at least 2-3 giving scenarios – Write down 2-3 financial gift totals that you think you might give to the Planting Roots Initiative. Many people give 1-2 times above and beyond their normal annual giving. So, if they usually give $10,000 over the course of a year, then they figure out how much they would have to give extra each month over the course of 3 years in order to get to that number (around $300). Then, they either give a part of that as a one time gift or they find the one time gift elsewhere. Usually, somewhere along the way, a person starts comparing what they spend on other things like eating out, coffee, etc., to see if they could get it higher. If it’s a married couple, usually they end up in different places initially, which is why it’s good to have 2-3 scenarios. Then, they can start to talk through it to find their commitment level. As you have these conversations, don’t focus most on your potential loss of income, but mostly on the kingdom gain that Jesus will generously bless.

Make a financial commitment in faith – Jesus grows us most outside of our comfort zones. Outside of our comfort zones we exercise our faith in Jesus to be who he says he is in our lives. Consider your budget and all the factors you need to consider, but make a decision from a place of faith. Trust God to provide for you like he has provided for you. Feel the freedom to land where you genuinely believe he wants you to land to help RCC take this significant kingdom step, whether it is less or more than you’d like. And let us know by taking the “pledge survey” on Oct. 24 at the “Vision Sunday at the Farm” so that we can set our budget before we meet with builders in November. Then follow through on that pledge on Pledge Sunday on Feb. 20, 2022!

These are a few steps that I think will help anyone get started who has never thought through making an “above and beyond normal giving” financial commitment. I’m so excited to see what Jesus does in all of our hearts as we follow his lead to Plant Roots so that we can bear God-glorifying fruit.

What’s the Biblical Basis for Church Membership? 3 Important Passages That Help Attenders Become Members

Why do churches like Redemption City Church have membership? It’s a question I’ve heard a few times over the years. It’s a question I wrestled with at one point in my life too. To me, the idea of church membership, whatever you call it (stakeholders, partners, etc.) sounded weird and a bit scary. And as far as I’m concerned, if I don’t see it in the Bible, I’d just assume do without it. But after studying the Scriptures, I found several reasons why I think the Bible affirms church membership. Membership in a church is a formal recognition from a church that a particular Christian is a believer who will reign eternally with Christ and a formal commitment between Christians to help one another carry out the Great Commission in a particular church. I affirm this understanding of church membership because of the following three passages (taken in the order that they are given in the NT) and my understanding of them.

Matthew 18:15-20

15 “If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother. 16 But if he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, that every charge may be established by the evidence of two or three witnesses. 17 If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church. And if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector. 18 Truly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. 19 Again I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. 20 For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.”

These words from Jesus seem to support the concept of church membership in a few ways. First, church membership makes the most sense when trying to figure out how to obey Jesus’ command to bring the “sinner” before the church. He says that if someone who is a part or a member of a church is caught in sin, that they should be brought before the church—if the first step doesn’t work. How do you know who to bring him before if there is no designated group of people like church membership? If there’s no membership, then who do you bring him before? Without membership, it seems like it’d be possible to bring him or her before strangers. It seems more likely that some kind of formal commitment between Christians to help each other carry out the Great Commission (i.e. church membership) exists.

Second, church membership makes the best sense of Jesus’ call to treat someone as an unbeliever. Jesus says that if the sinner doesn’t listen to the church and repent, “he should be treated like an unbeliever” (Matt. 18:17). How does a church treat unbeliever? They certainly want them to come to church right? So that’s not it. Perhaps it is removing him from a membership list? I think it makes the most sense that he’s saying unbelievers should be in our worship gatherings but not on our church member lists. So treating them as “unbelievers” means you remove them from your membership, while inviting them back onto it.

Third, church membership makes the best sense of Jesus’ “binding and loosing” language. After Jesus talks about removing a sinner from membership, he says “whatever you bind on earth is already bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth is already loosed in heaven” (Matt. 18:18). Since the “binding and loosing” corresponds to the removal or keeping of people in the church, it seems that it is pointing to both the reality of church membership and the responsibility of church members to steward this responsibility.

Jesus’ words in Matthew 18:15-20 indicate the need for something like church membership, whatever it is called (partnership, stakeholders, etc.).

1 Corinthians 5:1-2, 9-13

“It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that is not tolerated even among pagans, for a man has his father’s wife. And you are arrogant! Ought you not rather to mourn? Let him who has done this be removed from among you.”

 I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people— 10 not at all meaning the sexually immoral of this world, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world. 11 But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler—not even to eat with such a one. 12 For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Is it not those inside the church whom you are to judge? 13 God judges those outside. “Purge the evil person from among you.”

These passages from the Apostle Paul support the existence and importance of church membership. First, church membership makes the most sense of the Apostle Paul’s words to “remove” someone from among them in verse 2. While there is a lot we don’t know, it seems that someone in the Corinthian church is in the last stage of Jesus’ Matthew 18 process. So Paul tells them to “remove them.” Remove them from what? It seems most likely that Paul is having them removed from some type of membership. If it isn’t membership, what else would it be? Hard to come up with a good alternative. It’s most likely the removal from membership—the church’s public affirmation of their belief that this person is a citizen of Christ’s kingdom.

Second, church membership makes the most sense of the Apostle Paul’s words to “judge” those in the church. While there are a lot of bad connotations that come with “judging,” it seems that there is a type of judging Paul doesn’t want us to do (towards outsiders) and a kind he wants us to do (towards insiders). The first kind only wants to see condemnation. The second kind, which Paul advocates, wants to see restoration. In order to distinguish between the two types of “judging,” it seems like membership needs to exist. Otherwise, how would you know who the “insiders” are? Surely, the church at Corinth doesn’t have to judge every possible Christian. So it seems it is a Christian committed to their church as a member.

While more could be said, it seems that these passages from 1 Corinthians 5 supports church membership.

Hebrews 13:17

17 Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you.”

There are two main reasons why Hebrews 13:17 supports church membership. First, his call to “submit to your leaders” indicates the reality of a unique relationship, something like church membership, between a Christian and a specific church leader. How does a Christian know which church leader to submit too? Seems most likely that there is a church leader that a Christian commits to in a unique way—like membership. It would seem a bit odd for a Christian to have to commit to any leader, right?! There seems to be a way to know who “your” leaders are and who they aren’t.

Second, the writer’s emphasis on the account church leaders have to give for their “soul” supports church membership. This is a sobering passage for pastors. It’s overwhelming. If a church leader takes it seriously, how does he know for whom he’ll give an account? Membership is the most likely answer. I praise God I don’t have to give an account for every Christian. Heb 13:17 supports church membership because it assumes church leaders know which souls they will have to give an account for.

Whatever you call it, something like church membership needs to exist to make the most of these passages. We know that we don’t have it all figured out, but we are doing our best to base our church on the Bible. There are other Biblical passages, but these are a few key ones that are hard to make sense of without a concept like church membership. Hopefully, this made sense of where we think church membership comes from primarily in the Scripture.

Answers to Specific Prayers: Prayers for Two Evangelistic Opportunities by the End of the Week

Chris and I were finishing up a short meeting with a time of prayer. Although we weren’t meeting about evangelistic efforts, my prayers included a prayer that that God would provide each of us an opportunity to share the gospel with someone by the end of the week, that we couldn’t miss. Then I headed off to lunch.

When I got back from lunch, Chris immediately came into my office. He said, “You’ll never believe what happened. While you were at lunch, I heard someone knocking on the doors of the church building. The guy got aggressive and was trying to rip open one of the locked doors.”

Chris continued, “When I opened the door, the guy asked if he could come in and have someone pray with him.” Chris, of course, said that he could. Chris ended up sitting with the guy, listening to his story, and getting to share the gospel with him. Apparently, the man was driving down to a rehab facility and just happened to stop by for prayer! I wish I could say that the man gave his life to the Lord right then, but he didn’t. But certainly heard how to give his life to the Lord and was invited to do so.

That would have been a fun story to tell, even without the specific prayer. But with the specific prayer and God’s almost immediate response, it caused Jesus to be real in our hearts and our day in a way he wouldn’t have without it.

But what about me? Did I ever get an opportunity to share the gospel? Well, two days later, when my family and I were eating breakfast at a hotel before going to a University of Tennessee game, I did. We were watching the reading of the names of the 9/11 victims while we hurriedly ate the free Holiday Inn breakfast. And one of the ladies, an elderly lady, who was informing us that “breakfast is shutting down,” told us that she used to work at the Twin Towers decades ago. That conversation led to her move to L.A. and then the middle of nowhere Tennessee, where she had been living for a while.

As she lingered unusually long at our table, thankfully, God helped me realize what he was doing in that moment and helped me move the conversation to the gospel. She didn’t know the gospel, but she does now. She didn’t give her life to Christ when I invited her to, but I’m praying she has by now.

It’s so easy to try to do all of the things Jesus wants his followers to do, like evangelism, without simply asking him to help us do them. But remember, God can do more in a moment than we can do in a lifetime. He can make things happen so effortlessly and splendidly. I hope this story encourages you to pray specifically to the God who is present, willing, and able to help you today.
